Compare and Contrast How Grendel Is Portrayed in Grendel and Beowulf Essay.In Grendel, the story is told from Grendel's point of view. Therefore he is not viewed as a killing machine. In Beowulf however, it is the exact opposite.
Unferth accuses Beowulf, as a lad, of entering a dangerous, foolish seven-night swimming match on the open sea against a boy named Breca — and losing. Fortunately for the Dane, Beowulf demonstrates a noble spirit as well as ease with language as he refutes the charge and puts Unferth in his place.
Unferth. Unferth’s challenge to Beowulf’s honor differentiates him from Beowulf and helps to reveal some of the subtleties of the heroic code that the warriors must follow. Unferth is presented as a lesser man, a foil for the near-perfect Beowulf. (A foil is a character whose traits contrast with and thereby accentuate those of another character.).
Beowulf is also one of the similarities between the movie and poem. He portrayed as a strong, brave, loyal and honorable warrior who does whatever it takes to defend the people of Denmark. Beowulf also tell Unferth off in the movie the same way he does in the poem.
Unferth, a warrior in the tribe of the Spear-Danes, challenges Beowulf's boasts and claims about himself. When Beowulf shows up ready to fight Grendel, Unferth tells a story he's heard about Beowulf's swimming contest with Breca, suggesting that Beowulf lost that competition.
Beowulf is seen as a competent hero capable of defeating Grendel, bringing peace to the land once again. Although Beowulf is seen to have the advantage in the argument with Unferth, questions are to be raised about the absurd boldness of his acts and root cause of his speculated generosity. This is a recurring theme throughout Beowulf.
Unferth is presented as contrast to Beowulf, providing a glimpse of a poor warrior in contrast to Beowulf's good warrior. Unferth is boastful, just as Beowulf is, but unlike Beowulf Unferth lacks the moral courage to back up his boasts (and unlike Beowulf Unferth never does anything to stand against Grendel ).
Beowulf is a warrior of a pagan tribe and is, in a word, awesome. He is the most famous, strongest, and all around greatest fighter around - and he isn't afraid to tell you that.
