The Senior Thesis in Mathematical Sciences course allows students to engage in independent mathematical work in an active and modern subject area of the mathematical sciences, guided by an official research faculty member in the department of mathematics and culminating in a written thesis presented in an appropriate public forum.

As a guide, most MSc dissertations are between 30 and 50 A4 pages, double spaced, with normal font size and margins. Longer dissertations are not necessarily better, and the marks obtained depend much more on the quality of the content (especially the mathematics) than on the number of words. It is essential that the dissertation is well presented.

Most courses in mathematics at the undergraduate level are about math from 50-100 years ago (if not older). The Department of Mathematics offers a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in the following concentrations: applied mathematics, pure mathematics, general mathematics. Additionally, the Mathematics with Computer Science degree is offered to students wishing to pursue their interests in mathematics and theoretical computer science within a single undergraduate program.
The term 'dissertation' is largely used in the UK to refer to a final year undergraduate project. Other terminology is used outside the UK. This site will therefore use the following terms interchangeably - 'dissertation', final year project, extended essay, senior essay.
